Manufacturing Process Audit
Description of Project
A highly specialised maker of prestigious motor cars asked us to carry out an audit on its maintenance scheduling, with one specific focus being the ability to change the manufacture of an individual car to the customer’s specific requirements, even after manufacturing had begun.
With each vehicle built to the detailed requirements of the customer, including type, quality and materials used for interior and exterior finishing, our team was asked to ensure that changes could be better managed and costed.
Changes could occur at different points in the process – sometimes during the ordering process by the dealer or factory retail department - and some alterations could require input from engineering and production, and also the need for specialist work or the purchasing of exotic materials.
Better tracking and management was required for these changes, in order to meet delivery deadlines to often famous, influential or wealthy customers.
Chaucer’s scope
Our team was initially responsible for carrying out an on-site audit at the manufacturers main plant, visiting, meeting and interviewing all the departments to review the company’s manufacturing scheduling process from order-taking to delivery.
Our audit also incorporated a verbal report as well as the written report, both of which contained suggestions and recommendations to the firm on methods to improve its manufacturing, in particular the change-management process.
Benefits
Aside from the improved management of both manufacturing and change process, our client was able to realise improvements in efficiency, knowledge management and lessons learned, and also potential cost savings.
