New Supply Chain Management Facility
Description of Project
The new facility was to replace an existing one, but the criteria was strict – location was paramount and vehicle access on three sides a must. Owing to these specific requirements, changes to the selected building had to be made, meaning the involvement of third party vendors and the supply of specialist vehicle doors from overseas.
Crucial to the project’s success was timing, with on-schedule change over an absolute essential. Should change over be delayed for any reason, the ramifications for the business would be vast, given that the delay would negatively impact numerous airlines.
Chaucer’s Scope
Chaucer was asked to provide full project management support, with our expertise and experience enabling us to understand the complex supply chain management set up for which the new facility would be responsible.
We were also commissioned to carry out an assessment of the viability of success. This assessment included looking in detail at the project, its current status, the project team, the interfaces and interdependencies and establishing all the various risks and issues.
The review looked carefully at the planning – specifically the changes needed to the building and the total reliance on a small number of specialist equipment suppliers.
Benefits
Following our in-depth review, and illustrating the importance of thorough investigation, it was deemed too high a risk to the client’s business to pursue the new facility project.
A key reason for this was the number of changes required to the building and the associated supply of equipment from overseas suppliers. There were too many individual items, tasks and variables which could have caused a delay – a delay which would have had serious detrimental implications for the business as a whole.
While mitigating actions could be carried out, it was decided that the project should be deferred and that further improvements to the existing facility should be carried out instead.
