Operations Transformation using New Technologies
Description of Project
In common with much of the energy industry, our client wished to unlock business value by means of better use of ‘digital technology’ in its operations and, ultimately, throughout the entire value chain. The potential prize was large; industry research indicated that real time performance management combining existing and new technologies and industry best practices with data management systems to enable faster, safer and improved business decisions could lead to 10% increased production productivity of 3-5% and 10-20% reduction in Capex and Opex.
Chaucer was brought in not only to identify opportunities to transform the way the company manages its operations by means of the new technologies, but also to set up, scope and develop an approach based on project management techniques to allow our client confidently to realise the benefits identified. Our initial deliverables were therefore to create a strategic digital ‘road map’ (based on a Digital Oil Field of the Future) for our client’s group of operating assets, develop a business case for an overall program of activity, and then plan for their rollout based on a tightly managed feasibility study.
Our proven track record of pragmatic delivery was material in our appointment. Our brief also extended to provision of Change Management expertise, communication and engagement skills and technical quality assurance as a means to generate high levels of commitment and assurance that the befits identified would be delivered in practice.
Chaucer’s Scope
- Evaluation of client’s technical capability and audit of all existing and planned technical initiatives
- Develop and write a proposal for a technology based initiatives program, supported by an in-depth business case and feasibility study
- Planning, resource scheduling, progress monitoring and tracking
- Program Management, governance and assurance through detailed progress reporting
- Risk management and mitigation
- Interface and Interdependency identification and control
- Creation of a dedicated unique communications strategy and program for roll out
- Facilitation of handover of program to client’s permanent staff members
Benefits
A crucial benefit to the client was that Chaucer did not arrive with a pre determined ‘tool-kit’ but, rather, a flexible approach driven by our aim to understand the client’s ambitions and work out the most appropriate solution. This lead to a goal driven approach which successfully realised the benefits identified in the fields of: 1. Better asset awareness – enabling cycle times and the quality of tasks and decisions to be better, faster and cheaper; 2. Connecting up the gas value chain by improving linkages between regional and corporate centres of excellence. These were enabled by KPI Management and analysis based on data collection at source.
Chaucer managed the six month project using rigorous project management techniques to provide a very high degree of delivery assurance. These were handed over to the client’s teams to provide the basis for ongoing success.
