Releasing value from legacy databases – standardisation and access

Description of Project

Following some significant acquisitions our client faced the widespread challenge of integrating disparate databases and applications. A very large amount of untapped value was locked up in the data contained within these databases and applications. For example, extracting knowledge from an Historical Research Database could significantly reduce the cost of drug development by identifying, early on in its development stage, any adverse side effects to justify a prompt end to the work. The database was however available only to very few researchers and there was a lack of internal experts experienced in the use of the various data domains.

Our client wanted to merge standardised and validated data extracted from the Historic Research Database into a corporate data warehouse with much wider access to assist and support broader corporate goals of general projects integration and data mining.  Such a project faced a number of challenges which Chaucer was asked to help overcome. These included finding data domain experts, identifying buried data and assessing its value, changing data logical structure and transferring the standardised version to a stable system, verifying and approving data to be moved to the new corporate data warehouse and resolving any anomalies.

Chaucer simplified the complexity of the project into two phases which it then systematically project managed in both business and IT environments to ensure value was maximised by:

1. Creation of a new historical database for incorporation into the new data warehouse, and the migration of all legacy data.
2. Identification of new clinical data throughout the corporation, classifying it and migrating the targeted data into the new database.

Chaucer’s Scope

  • Project Management and leadership to provide rigour and discipline leading to best practice processes, tools and techniques to deliver the project on time and within budget
  • Detailed project planning and work scoping including project resource scheduling, estimating and cost control, document management and project change control
  • Implementing and integrating several new client methods and processes
  • Developing the project organisation, roles, responsibilities and accountabilities plus a management reporting structure including weekly, monthly and ad hoc reports
  • Project progress measurement, tracking and reporting
  • The implementation and operation of project assurance processes so that client governance, corporate assurance and quality processes were implemented appropriately
  • Risk Management including risk analysis &and the maintenance of a risk register together with the associated mitigation actions
  • Communications program including stakeholder management and internal messaging
